Every Face Has a Name (2015)

This Swedish documentary traces the fates of some of the hundreds of nameless prisoners of war and survivors seen in archival footage arriving in Malmö Harbour, Sweden on April 28, 1945.

Filmmaker Magnes Gertten continues the work he begun in Harbour of Hope (2011), tracking down several of the refugees seen in the footage and discovering their story. The result is a moving testimony about the moment of liberation studded with touching anecdotes of the survivor’s lives both before and after the war.

The faces in the archival footage come to life as the people they belong to, now living all over the world, recognise themselves and recount their amazing stories of love, loss and hope. In comparing the events at Malmö to the way current-day refugees are received, the film finds its sharpest focus, making the importance of empathy and a social conscience painfully obvious.
