Nathan Fabre is a teacher in a French-German school, working on his thesis about French resistance to the Nazis during World War Two. During a research trip to Buchenwald, he finds a photo of a prisoner who bears an uncanny resemblance to his father. When his father shrugs off his queries, Nathan pursues the matter himself, and his research becomes much more than academic, and is complicated further by his romance with a young German woman who shares her own family’s history with him.

Adapted from Fabrice Humbert’s semi-autobiographical, prize-winning 2009 novel of the same name.
