World War II. On the Caribbean island of Martinique, Harry Morgan (Bogart) captains a charter boat and maintains a policy of strict neutrality toward the war and Vichy France, which controls the island. But everything changes when Morgan meets young, American cabaret singer Marie Browning (Bacall) and a fugitive leader of the French Resistance who both need a way off the island.
